SPRINGFIELD, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Frequenters of the LA Fitness gym in Springfield, Delaware County, are urged to exercise extra caution following a concerning series of three thefts in as many days. The incidents, which began at the end of October, have prompted local authorities to advise gym-goers to take preventive measures to safeguard their belongings while working out.
According to the Springfield Police Department, thieves have targeted gym patrons and their possessions in the LA Fitness parking lot located on Baltimore Pike. Chief Joseph Daly of the Springfield police disclosed that stolen items include firearms and high-end jewelry, which has left law enforcement puzzled about why individuals would bring such valuable items to the gym. The reported thefts occurred on October 26, 28, and 29, all between the hours of 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Chief Daly emphasized that these thefts were particularly bold in nature. Even using lockers with padlocks is no guarantee of safety since the thieves have been known to employ bolt cutters to remove locks. The situation could escalate if the culprits gain access to victims’ keys or wallets, potentially compromising their homes, vehicles, and identities.
Although surveillance cameras are installed within the gym premises, none are placed within the locker rooms. This lack of internal surveillance prompted Chief Daly to stress the importance of vigilance among gym-goers. He advised patrons to observe and report individuals who seem out of place and not actively engaging in workouts, as such individuals may be scouting the premises or preparing to commit theft.
LA Fitness management assured Action News that they are taking steps to enhance security by increasing personnel at the front entrance and conducting more frequent checks of the locker rooms.
As investigations continue, Springfield gym-goers are encouraged to exercise caution and remain vigilant to protect their belongings and personal security while enjoying their fitness routines.
