Melbourne Grandmother Loses 16kg with Ozempic After Traditional Methods Fail

by Daisy

Karen Holman, a 52-year-old grandmother from Melbourne, has achieved a remarkable 16-kilogram weight loss since she began using Ozempic last September. Holman’s journey to reclaim her health follows a period of profound personal loss and previous struggles with conventional weight loss methods.

Holman’s life took a tragic turn when she lost her housemate, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 33 in 2020. The grief was compounded by her sister’s death from terminal cancer in August 2023. The intense sorrow led Holman to neglect her own well-being.

“I was overwhelmed with grief and depression,” Holman told Daily Mail Australia. “During those challenging months of caring for my sister, I let my health deteriorate. I just gave up on taking care of myself.”

Her situation began to change after her sister Paula had started using Ozempic approximately six months earlier. Initially skeptical about obtaining the medication, Holman reached out to the online prescription service Moshy following her sister’s passing.

“Once I began using Ozempic, I saw almost immediate results. The weight started coming off, which motivated me to continue making healthy choices and staying active,” Holman explained.

Holman reported losing 6 kilograms in the first six weeks of starting Ozempic. Her total weight dropped from 88 kilograms to 72 kilograms, with the medication also contributing to the reversal of a fatty liver condition and improvements in back pain and migraines.

“From the beginning, I noticed significant improvements in my health,” Holman said. “My liver issues resolved, my back pain lessened, and my migraines became less frequent.”

In addition to the medication, Holman adjusted her eating habits. Despite concerns that Ozempic might be seen as a “cheat” for weight loss, she emphasized that it did not replace the need for a healthy diet and exercise.

“If I don’t eat well, I won’t lose weight. Ozempic helps me stay on track with healthy eating and exercise,” she noted. “It’s like a boost that makes sticking to a good regimen easier.”

Holman expressed satisfaction with her experience using Ozempic, highlighting that she did not encounter any adverse side effects and found the weekly injections manageable.

Dietitian Kirby Sorenson from Moshy supports the use of prescription weight loss medications like Ozempic, stressing that they should be used as part of a holistic approach that includes diet, exercise, and a healthy relationship with food.

“Weight loss medications are often stigmatized as an easy solution, but they still require significant effort and commitment,” Sorenson said. “Success with Ozempic involves focusing on a balanced diet, increasing physical activity, and repairing relationships with food that may have been disrupted by diet culture.”

Holman’s journey underscores the potential of combining medical support with lifestyle changes to achieve sustainable weight loss and improved health outcomes.
