LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) — With the recent FDA approval of GLP-1 medications for both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals, many are considering these drugs as part of their weight loss strategies heading into the new year.
Dr. Drew Payne, a physician at Texas Tech specializing in weight management, shares valuable insights on these emerging treatments, which have garnered attention for their effectiveness in aiding weight loss.
“GLP-1 medications are highly effective for weight loss, with some individuals losing up to 15% of their body weight,” Dr. Payne explains. “That’s a significant reduction.”
These medications, which work through two primary mechanisms, alter the body’s sense of satiety and slow the digestive process. “They help individuals feel fuller for longer, leading to reduced calorie intake. Additionally, they shift the body’s weight set point, which can result in substantial weight loss,” he says.
Despite their success, there was initial controversy regarding the use of GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, as they were originally developed for diabetes management. Many questioned whether it was fair to allocate these medications to people without diabetes when there were concerns about limited availability. However, recent research and data have cleared the air.
“The FDA and pharmaceutical companies have extensively studied these drugs in both diabetic and non-diabetic populations, confirming that they are safe for both groups,” Dr. Payne notes. “That being said, no medication is a one-size-fits-all solution. Based on your individual health profile, your physician may recommend other treatments in addition to these medications.”
While GLP-1 medications are generally well-tolerated, Dr. Payne stresses the importance of consulting with a healthcare provider before starting any new treatment regimen. “All medications come with potential side effects, especially when combined with other drugs. It’s crucial for patients to work with an obesity specialist or their primary care physician to tailor a treatment plan that fits their unique needs.”
As many individuals look ahead to the new year and contemplate their weight loss goals, Dr. Payne offers an essential piece of advice: “Don’t go it alone.” Whether through the support of a primary care physician, a friend, or a spouse, having an accountability partner can greatly increase the chances of success.
“Having someone to keep you accountable on your weight loss journey can make all the difference,” he says.
For those considering GLP-1 medications as part of their weight loss plan, Dr. Payne emphasizes that medical guidance is key to achieving sustainable, long-term results.
