CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Popular weight loss and diabetes medications, including Ozempic and Wegovy, may soon be covered by Medicare, opening the door for broader access to these treatments for millions of Americans.
These medications, currently gaining attention for their effectiveness in weight management, have been added to a list of 16 drugs that the government plans to negotiate prices for under the Medicare program. However, negotiations between the government and manufacturers will be necessary to finalize any coverage deals.
Dr. Cate Varney, an Obesity Management Specialist, emphasized the significant benefits of these medications, particularly for individuals struggling with obesity and type 2 diabetes. “The cost is a huge barrier for many patients, preventing them from starting or continuing treatment,” she explained. “There’s so much overall benefit for those in need.”
Ozempic, primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes, has been found to offer benefits beyond blood sugar control. Research indicates it can reduce the risk of heart disease and improve kidney health. While Ozempic is not marketed as a weight loss drug, it has been shown to assist users in shedding pounds, making it valuable for weight management as well.
“Twenty percent of medications in the U.S. are used off-label because people see their benefits extend beyond the original purpose, and that’s true for these medications,” Dr. Varney noted.
Despite the surge in third-party websites offering similar drugs, Dr. Varney stressed the importance of obtaining these medications through a medical provider to ensure their safety and authenticity. “These medications go through rigorous testing by the FDA to ensure safety and effectiveness,” she said.
While Ozempic and similar drugs can aid in weight loss, they are not a standalone solution. Dr. Varney advises that patients combine the medication with lifestyle changes such as improved diet and increased physical activity to achieve the best results. “These medications work best when used alongside lifestyle modifications,” she added.
As the conversation around Medicare coverage for these drugs continues, Dr. Varney encourages individuals to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for their needs.
