McCabes Pharmacy has launched a new Medicated Weight Management Service, offering patients the opportunity to access Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a prescription treatment licensed for weight management. This service aims to provide structured support for weight management, with access to prescription treatments when clinically appropriate.
Mounjaro will be available to eligible patients after an assessment by a doctor. The service is part of McCabes’ broader approach to supporting individuals in managing their weight effectively. Other weight management treatments may be introduced in the future.
Obesity is a growing health concern in Ireland, with the Healthy Ireland Survey 2024 reporting that 21% of adults are living with obesity, and 35% are classified as overweight. This means more than half of Irish adults are struggling with weight-related issues.
How the Service Works:
Doctor Consultation – Patients can book an online consultation with a doctor via McCabes Pharmacy’s website or through their own GP. The doctor will assess if prescription treatment, such as Mounjaro, is suitable for the patient.
Prescription – If the treatment is deemed appropriate, the doctor or GP will issue a prescription, which can be sent to any McCabes Pharmacy location.
Pharmacy Consultation – A trained healthcare provider will conduct a structured consultation, including BMI and waist circumference checks, before dispensing the prescribed medication.
Denis O’Driscoll, Superintendent Pharmacist at McCabes Pharmacy, highlighted the importance of providing safe, evidence-based, and pharmacist-supported care. “Weight management is a complex and individual journey,” he said, adding that the pharmacy is dedicated to helping patients make informed health decisions.
McCabes Pharmacy will also offer educational resources and in-store consultations to ensure patients fully understand their treatment options.
It’s important to note that, like all prescription medications, Mounjaro is subject to a doctor’s clinical assessment and may not be suitable for everyone. Patients should always consult a healthcare professional before starting treatment.
