Novo Nordisk Introduces $499 Cash Option for Wegovy with Home Delivery

by Daisy

In a move aimed at expanding access to its popular weight-loss drug, Wegovy, Novo Nordisk (NVO) has unveiled a new cash-pay program that offers the treatment for $499 per month, along with home delivery. This pricing structure comes as part of the company’s efforts to make Wegovy more affordable for a wider range of patients.

This launch follows a similar initiative from Eli Lilly (LLY), which introduced a $499 cash-pay option for its weight-loss medication, Zepbound. The competition between the two pharmaceutical giants in the GLP-1 market has intensified, with both companies recognizing the growing demand for these medications and working to broaden access to their products.

The decision to offer this cash option comes after the FDA confirmed that Wegovy’s active ingredient, semaglutide, and Zepbound’s tirzepatide are no longer in shortage. This shift opens the door for the development of unbranded alternatives, further intensifying competition in the weight-loss drug market.

The new cash-pay programs represent a significant price reduction—more than 50% off the standard list price of Wegovy, which is approximately $1,350 per month. While the list price is high, most patients previously paid less depending on their insurance coverage.

Novo Nordisk’s stock saw a notable 4% increase following the announcement of the new pricing model on Wednesday.

The cash-pay option is specifically designed for uninsured individuals or those whose commercial insurance plans do not cover weight-loss medications. The initiative will be managed through a newly launched business segment called NovoCare Pharmacy.

According to Dave Moore, President of Novo Nordisk’s North American division, “Over 55 million people in the U.S. now have insurance coverage for weight management medicines, and 90% of Wegovy patients with insurance pay $0 to $25 per month for their treatment.”

This move underscores the growing competition among leading pharmaceutical companies in the weight-loss drug market as they seek to meet the increasing demand for affordable treatments.
