A weight-loss expert has revealed that a humble, affordable ingredient found in most kitchens could significantly enhance your fat-burning efforts. Professor Franklin Joseph, an authority at Dr. Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, claims that mushrooms, which are often overlooked, could “turbocharge” weight loss due to their rich antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
According to Prof. Joseph, mushrooms are not only low in calories but are also packed with ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant that may aid in weight management. “Ergothioneine, predominantly found in mushrooms, has notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits,” he explained. “These qualities can boost metabolic processes and support weight loss goals.”
Mushrooms are identified as the primary dietary source of ergothioneine, an amino acid known for protecting cells from oxidative stress and inflammation—factors closely linked to obesity and metabolic disorders. By reducing oxidative damage, ergothioneine could improve cellular function and metabolism, thereby promoting weight loss.
Prof. Joseph suggests that incorporating a variety of mushrooms into meals is both cost-effective and beneficial. Common varieties such as shiitake, oyster, and king oyster mushrooms are particularly high in ergothioneine and widely available in supermarkets. For example, a 125g pack of shiitake mushrooms can be purchased for just £1.75 at Tesco, with research indicating that consuming 35-50g of mushrooms daily could provide a meaningful dose of ergothioneine for weight management. This equates to approximately 50p per portion, making it an affordable addition to any diet.
For those who dislike mushrooms or seek a more concentrated dose, multi-mushroom supplements are a viable alternative. “These supplements combine extracts from different mushroom species, offering a higher dose of ergothioneine and other beneficial compounds,” Prof. Joseph noted. However, he stressed the importance of consulting a healthcare professional before beginning any supplementation regimen.
In addition to ergothioneine, mushrooms offer other weight loss benefits. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, which aids digestion and promotes feelings of fullness. Mushrooms also provide essential vitamins, such as B vitamins, and minerals that support overall health and metabolism.
Prof. Joseph also recommended replacing higher-calorie ingredients with mushrooms in various dishes. “Using mushrooms as a substitute for meat in meals like stir-fries, stews, or even burgers can help reduce calorie intake without sacrificing flavor,” he said.
While mushrooms can play a valuable role in weight loss, Prof. Joseph emphasized that they should be incorporated into a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. “Regular exercise, staying hydrated, and practicing mindful eating are essential to any successful weight loss journey,” he concluded.
