Sprung Gym Flooring, a high-performance gym flooring company based in the UK, has introduced a groundbreaking product: the world’s first gym flooring made from recycled coffee grounds.
The company began offering the new flooring for pre-order on its website on April 17. Each tile is made up of 30% recycled coffee grounds, combined with Sprung’s signature high-density rubber. The result is a durable, shock-absorbing surface with a subtle coffee aroma, designed to perform at a high standard while also serving as a distinctive feature in gym spaces.
Richard McKay, CEO of Sprung, explained, “What’s great about this product is that it delivers the same performance as our existing tiles, but with a sustainable twist.”
McKay added that the company has always sought innovative ways to use available materials. “Incorporating coffee grounds was the perfect solution, benefiting both users and the environment,” he said.
Sprung chose coffee grounds because coffee is one of the most common waste products worldwide, with millions of tonnes discarded each year. According to the company, the natural properties of coffee grounds enhance the flooring’s shock absorption, providing extra protection for joints during intense workouts. Additionally, the use of recycled coffee grounds helps reduce waste, as the material is widely available. The flooring also offers thermal regulation, ensuring a comfortable floor temperature year-round.
Sprung’s new product aims to combine high performance with sustainability, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly innovation in the fitness industry.
