Dynamo Gym has been named The Argus’s Gym of the Year for the second year running, marking another milestone for the Hove-based fitness centre.
Located on Davigdor Road near Seven Dials, Dynamo Gym was founded in 2021 by husband-and-wife duo Ben and Cat. The pair expressed their gratitude after receiving the honour once again.
“We couldn’t be happier to have won,” they said. “We were genuinely surprised to be voted Your Favourite Gym for the second year in a row. It’s amazing to see how much support we have for what we do.”
Ben and Cat also highlighted that the award is a celebration of not just the gym, but the community that has flourished around it. “It feels like a celebration of the wonderful community we’ve built,” they said.
With over 25 years of combined experience in the fitness industry, Ben and Cat bring a unique approach to fitness. Ben is a qualified physiotherapist with a background in sports and exercise science, while Cat has a background in NHS mental health and health promotion, with additional experience supporting disabled adults.
They aim to create a gym environment that feels welcoming and non-intimidating. “Conventional gyms can sometimes feel unsafe or unwelcoming,” they explained. “That’s why we’ve designed Dynamo Gym to be different.”
The gym’s layout reflects this philosophy: there are no mirrors, reducing distractions and discouraging body comparisons. Additionally, only six members are allowed at a time, with a coach always on hand for support. For those who might feel nervous about starting their fitness journey, the gym offers free “get to know the gym” sessions.
Dynamo Gym follows a weight-neutral approach to fitness, focusing on overall health and well-being rather than weight loss. They offer inclusive programmes suitable for people of all sizes.
“Our approach is built on expert guidance, personalisation, and community support,” Ben and Cat said. “When you come to Dynamo Gym, you’re not just training—you’re becoming part of a community focused on strength, inclusivity, and empowerment.”
To encourage more people to try strength training, Dynamo Gym runs monthly “Sunday Sessions,” where the public is invited to join free coached sessions. These sessions aim to demystify the gym environment, provide exercise guidance, and help individuals begin strength training in a sustainable way.
In addition, the gym now offers physiotherapy services to help people restore movement and function after injury, illness, or disability, while also providing education on improving mobility, reducing pain, and enhancing overall well-being.
