Does Obesity Affect Children's Intelligence?

Does obesity affect children’s intelligence? This is a question that many people want to know, so what is the relationship between obesity and children’s intelligence? People generally have this knowledge: the heavier at birth, the better the brain development, which means that the child is more intelligent. If this assertion has been accepted, then we cannot hold this view of obese people.

According to recent studies, obesity has a certain impact on children’s intelligence. In March 1989, researchers surveyed the intelligence and academic performance of some obese children in 18 primary schools and showed that: IQ of obese children (the total IQ of the Wexler Children’s Intelligence Scale is obtained by adding the verbal IQ and the operational IQ) Lower than normal children is due to low operational IQ, and the level of operational IQ reflects the quality of children’s vision, perception, receptive ability, and ability to grasp key points. Therefore, it is believed that obesity can affect the ability of children in the above-mentioned aspects. The reason for the low IQ of the simple obese children is not due to some kind of organic disorder in the body caused by obesity, but because the obesity makes the children’s intelligence not fully developed, so that the computing ability and quick thinking in learning are at a disadvantage. Therefore, the hands-on ability, the ability to distinguish, and the ability to recognize things are not as good as ordinary children. The survey also found that not only did obese children have low operational IQs, but 6 of the 8 courses were lower than normal-weight children. From the results of this study, it can be seen that the negative effect of obesity on children’s intellectual development can exceed the positive effect of precocious puberty on their intelligence. It breaks the previous understanding that the intellectual development of children abroad is consistent with their physical development, and the intelligence of precocious children is better than that of children of the same age.
