Fairfield, CT — Fairfield has unveiled a new outdoor fitness center at the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities, aimed at promoting physical health among its adult and senior residents. The $262,000 facility features a range of equipment and amenities designed to support fitness and rehabilitation.
The fitness center, which is free to use, includes strength training equipment, a swing set, and an agility walking path. The equipment is installed on a cushioned, rubberized surface, providing a safe and accessible space for exercise. Special attention was given to ensure that the equipment accommodates individuals with disabilities or physical limitations.
Julie DeMarco, Fairfield’s Director of Human Services, spearheaded the project. “The goal of this project was to get seniors back outside after the COVID-19 pandemic,” DeMarco said. The initiative was funded by the state’s American Rescue Plan Act and a state grant dedicated to senior center enhancements. Fairfield’s state legislative delegation played a crucial role in securing the additional funds.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new fitness center was attended by town and state officials. First Selectman Bill Gerber, who supported the funding allocation while serving on the Representative Town Meeting, expressed enthusiasm for the new facility. “This is something permanent for the town, and I hope that using it can become a part of people’s regular routine,” Gerber said. He also mentioned that he plans to use the equipment himself.
Crews from the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department were responsible for the construction of the fitness center. The new facility is expected to be a valuable addition to the community, providing a dedicated space for outdoor exercise and wellness activities.
