The study suggests that these drugs, known for targeting the brain’s reward centers, could potentially reduce the desire for nicotine. However, experts caution that the research has limitations and further investigation is needed.

The research, conducted by experts from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institutes of Health, and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, involved analyzing data from 223,000 individuals, including smokers with type 2 diabetes. The study observed that participants who took semaglutide were less likely to seek medical care related to smoking compared to those using other diabetes medications. Approximately 6,000 participants were on semaglutide, while others used different anti-diabetes drugs.
Key Findings
The study tracked electronic health records over a year, monitoring whether participants sought treatment for tobacco use, were prescribed cessation medications, or received counseling. Results indicated that semaglutide users had a lower risk of requiring medical attention for tobacco addiction. These effects were observed as early as 30 days after starting the medication.
“Semaglutide was associated with reduced smoking cessation medication prescriptions and counseling,” the researchers noted. Similar outcomes were found among patients with and without obesity, suggesting that semaglutide’s potential in treating tobacco use disorder warrants further clinical trials.
Understanding the Mechanism
The potential of semaglutide in curbing nicotine cravings may be linked to its influence on the brain’s reward centers. Dr. Tamika Henry, founder of the California-based Unlimited Health Institute, explained that the drug decreases the dopamine surge associated with rewarding behaviors, such as smoking. “When you engage in activities like smoking, alcohol consumption, or gambling, dopamine surges, making you want to repeat the behavior,” she told CBS News. “Ozempic works by reducing this dopamine surge, thereby diminishing the desire for the activity.”
Considerations and Cautions
While the findings are promising, Dr. Henry warned of possible side effects associated with semaglutide, such as nausea, heartburn, and fatigue. She emphasized that medication should be part of a comprehensive approach, including lifestyle changes, to ensure long-term success in quitting smoking. The study’s authors also acknowledged its limitations, including potential documentation bias and missing data on participants’ smoking status post-treatment.
As the medical community continues to explore semaglutide’s applications beyond diabetes and weight management, these preliminary findings highlight the need for more extensive research to confirm its effectiveness in smoking cessation.
