I Went to the Olympics, and I’ve Never Felt More Appreciative of My Own Mind and Body

by Daisy

As someone who grew up dancing and appreciating the arts more than sports, the Olympics always seemed like a distant world of impressive feats I admired from afar. I was never the competitive type, finding more joy in personal accomplishments and shared experiences than in the heat of competition. However, my recent experience attending the Olympics with Team USA’s official airline, Delta, transformed my perspective in unexpected ways.

From Spectator to Enthusiast

My initial excitement was palpable as I prepared for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Our itinerary included the opening ceremony, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s gymnastics, and beach volleyball. Despite the rain during the opening ceremony, I marveled at the athletes representing their countries with pride, worrying about their well-being but savoring every moment of the spectacle.

A Newfound Appreciation

Witnessing the swimming events was a highlight. The sheer speed and agility of athletes like Katie Ledecky and Paige Madden were mesmerizing. The crowd’s cheers, especially during the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay, added to the euphoria. I felt my heart swell as I saw the intensity and coordination of the swimmers, reflecting on the beauty of their physical prowess.

In gymnastics, watching Hillary Heron perform Simone Biles’ signature moves was a revelation. Her effortless grace and strength reminded me of my own dancing days and the sense of freedom and accomplishment that comes with mastering a move. Although I didn’t see Team USA, witnessing such skill and dedication was awe-inspiring.

The final event, beach volleyball, brought a different kind of joy. Kelly Cheng and Sarah Hughes’ camaraderie and celebration after their victory highlighted the essence of teamwork and mutual encouragement. Their genuine joy and high-fives were a reminder that, despite not being an athlete, I too could appreciate and find fulfillment in the shared human experience of striving and achieving.

Reflections on Human Potential

The Olympic experience was both inspirational and educational. It illuminated how athletes push their limits and embrace resilience, determination, and ambition. Watching these incredible competitors made me reflect on my own life and the progress I strive for. It reinforced that while not everyone is an Olympic athlete, we all engage in our own personal challenges and accomplishments, continuously moving toward our goals.

The Olympics taught me that we are all capable of great things, and that our journeys, whether in sports or in everyday life, are filled with potential and meaning. The event was a celebration of human spirit and capability, reminding me to appreciate my own mind and body and the unique path I’m on.
