Portland Bay School in Glenelg Shire has recently upgraded its facilities with the addition of new fitness equipment, thanks to the efforts of the local non-profit organization United Way Glenelg.
The newly installed equipment aims to enhance both the physical and mental health of the students, with a particular focus on those with special needs. The funds for this initiative were raised through United Way Glenelg’s SharkPitch event held in 2023.
SharkPitch is a virtual fundraising event where participants present their funding proposals to potential donors online. Portland Bay School Educational Support Worker Hannah Palfreyman and student Hayley Pumpa successfully secured $20,799 during the event, which was allocated to the purchase of the fitness gear.
Nichole Carr, Executive Officer at United Way Glenelg, emphasized the benefits of the new equipment. She noted that it would provide a valuable “time-out” option for students who find the school environment emotionally challenging. “The equipment offers a means for students who struggle to regulate their emotions to take a break and engage in physical activity, helping them to regain their composure and continue their day positively,” Carr explained.
