During the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Erin Hurter found herself teaching yoga in a small Burns Court studio. The classes were intimate, filled with the anxiety that gripped the world at the time. But Erin had a vision. She took her practice outdoors, offering free yoga sessions at a park near O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Marina Jack. What started as a small gathering of friends quickly grew into a movement, attracting hundreds of participants twice a week. Four years later, Erin now leads the largest yoga community in the region.

A Community-Driven Mission

When asked why she continues to offer these classes, Erin’s answer is simple yet profound: “It’s my way of giving back to the community that has given so much to me.” A Sarasota native and Cardinal Mooney graduate, Erin’s roots run deep in the area. Her previous work with Visit Sarasota heightened her awareness of the struggles people faced during the pandemic. “Seeing so many struggling financially during COVID made me want to offer something free and accessible,” she explains.

What sets Yoga by the Bay apart from other yoga offerings? According to Erin, it’s the unbeatable location coupled with what she calls “yogi wisdom.” During each session, Erin weaves in thoughtful reflections like, “Let go of whatever is holding you back” and “Forgiveness won’t change the past, but it will change the future.” One participant aptly noted, “This is all very spiritual. The yoga almost feels like a sidelight!”

A Welcoming Atmosphere

Erin’s classes attract a diverse crowd, defying the notion of a “typical” yoga participant. “It sounds cliché, but they really are all ages and abilities,” Erin says. Her classes are designed to be a judgment-free zone, where everyone can move at their own pace. The inclusivity extends beyond just people—pets are welcome too. “We’ve had everything from children to parents to even birds in the class,” Erin laughs. Some attendees come just to sit on a bench and take in the serene environment. “It’s a beautiful setting,” she adds.

Over the years, Erin has received countless messages from those who attend her classes, and their stories have touched her deeply. “I could write a book on all the sweet and sad things I’ve heard,” she reflects. Many participants are navigating difficult times in their lives, and Erin’s classes offer them a sense of belonging and solace. “It’s incredibly fulfilling when someone tells me our classes are the highlights of their week,” she shares.

Yoga Through the Seasons

Erin’s commitment to her community is unwavering, as she leads classes year-round, regardless of the weather. “We’ve been out there in 25-degree weather and 90-degree weather,” she says. Her dedication stems from the belief that many people rely on these classes for connection and support, especially during the holidays. “Holidays can be the loneliest time of the year for many people, and I want to be there for them, even on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day morning,” Erin says.

Unexpected Connections

Erin’s classes have also been the backdrop for some heartwarming stories. “I’ve had people meet in class and fall in love,” she reveals. One couple is even getting married, and another duo met earlier this year. For newcomers to the area, Erin’s classes offer more than just physical exercise—they provide a sense of community and belonging.

Looking Ahead: New Ventures

As for what’s next, Erin is excited about hosting her first overnight retreat. “A few dozen of us are heading down to the new Sunseeker Resort in Punta Gorda,” she says. The resort, which boasts an elevated yoga studio overlooking Charlotte Harbor, has quickly become a favorite of Erin’s. “My husband and I recently stayed there and loved it. They’re giving us discounts on rooms, and there are eight different restaurants. Any of your readers are welcome to join us,” she adds.
