GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A novel weight loss procedure known as the Transoral Outlet Reduction Procedure (TORe) is now available at Corewell Health, offering a potential solution for patients who have struggled with weight regain following gastric bypass surgery. According to Dr. Stephen Simmer, a gastroenterologist at Corewell Health, this minimally invasive procedure might also be covered by insurance.
TORe targets patients who have either regained weight or failed to achieve their desired weight loss outcomes after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. The procedure involves guiding a thin, flexible tube through the throat into the gastric outlet, where stitches are placed to narrow the outlet, thereby slowing the stomach’s emptying process. This approach helps patients feel full sooner, consume less food, and ultimately, lose weight.
“This procedure is performed under anesthesia in a hospital setting, ensuring the patient remains asleep and is carefully monitored throughout. As it is entirely endoscopic, there are no skin incisions or visible scars,” Dr. Simmer explained.
First introduced in 2013, TORe has recently received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), leading to increased insurance coverage for the procedure.
Dr. Simmer highlighted that TORe is particularly suited for individuals who, after gastric bypass surgery, have lost the sensation of fullness soon after eating and have experienced weight regain.
For patients looking to address these issues, TORe may offer a viable option for improving weight management and enhancing overall satisfaction with their weight loss journey.
