Say Namaste to Noir Yoga: Bed-Stuy’s New Black-Owned Yoga Studio

by Daisy

BED-STUY, NY — This month, Bed-Stuy welcomed Noir Yoga, a new yoga studio founded by local resident Mason Mason. Having practiced yoga for 20 years and often being the only Black man in his classes, Mason decided it was time to create a space where diversity and accessibility are paramount.

Noir Yoga, which opened on August 1, aims to be inclusive of all body types, gender expressions, sexualities, and ethnicities. The studio is located on Ralph Avenue and offers a range of classes designed to accommodate various skill levels and financial situations. Notably, Noir Yoga features “pay-what-you-wish” classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, reflecting its commitment to making yoga accessible to everyone.

Mason’s vision for the studio extends beyond traditional offerings. Plans are underway to introduce a hip-hop yoga fusion class, a heated yoga class, and a breathwork class in the near future. He emphasizes that Noir Yoga is not just about inclusivity in name but in practice, with a team of instructors predominantly consisting of people of color and community workshops like “Yoga for Black Men” coming soon.

Despite a long-standing passion for yoga, Mason never anticipated opening his own studio. With a PhD in education and experience teaching schoolchildren, he transitioned from a career in education to working in big tech while running Noir Yoga. This blend of expertise has contributed to the studio’s innovative approach, which includes high-tech features such as iPads, a mobile app, and top-of-the-line speakers.

Mason’s commitment to building a yoga community where he felt he belonged is reflected in the studio’s ethos. “I want people to know that this space is for everyone,” Mason stated. “We truly are inclusive, and our staff and community represent that.”

In addition to his work at Noir Yoga, Mason is exploring partnerships with local preschools to introduce yoga to young children. His dedication to creating a welcoming environment and his innovative approach are setting Noir Yoga apart as a beacon of inclusivity and community spirit.

Noir Yoga is located at 109 Ralph Avenue, Bed-Stuy, and is already making waves as a new and inclusive hub for wellness in the neighborhood.
