In a remarkable weight loss journey, Kunal Upadhyay, a 36-year-old who has worked night shifts for the past 14 years, has successfully lost 20 kilograms over the past year. His transformative approach combined intermittent fasting with a straightforward exercise regimen, showcasing a practical method for significant weight loss.
Kunal’s weight loss journey began on July 16, 2023, when he weighed 93 kilograms. Motivated to improve his health and fitness, he initially adopted the OMAD (One Meal A Day) diet. This intermittent fasting method involves consuming all daily calories within a single hour and fasting for the remaining 23 hours. The OMAD diet aims to promote fat burning and streamline meal planning but can be challenging due to prolonged periods of hunger and potential nutrient deficiencies if the meal is not well-balanced.
After two months on the OMAD plan, Kunal incorporated daily running and cycling, covering 20 kilometers each day. This combination led to a significant weight reduction, bringing his weight down to 81 kilograms. However, Kunal noted a loss of muscle mass and decided to switch to a new intermittent fasting schedule: 16 hours of fasting followed by an 8-hour eating window.
In addition to fasting, Kunal made significant dietary changes by eliminating sugar and focusing on protein-rich foods. His diet was complemented by regular weight training to build muscle and improve body composition. “Counting daily calories and monitoring my weight kept me motivated and on track,” Kunal shared.
Currently, Kunal weighs 70 kilograms with 19.24% body fat. His success highlights the importance of basic exercise in the weight loss process. Regular physical activity, such as walking, jogging, and cycling, increases calorie expenditure and boosts metabolism. This leads to a calorie deficit, where more calories are burned than consumed, resulting in fat loss.
Exercise also offers psychological benefits by enhancing mood and reducing stress, which can help prevent emotional eating. While diet is crucial for weight loss, incorporating consistent exercise can accelerate progress and contribute to the long-term sustainability of a healthy weight.
