NEW ORLEANS — University Medical Center (UMC) has unveiled a new dedicated wing aimed at tackling obesity, one of the most pressing health issues in Louisiana. The state-of-the-art facility will be staffed by seven specialists in bariatric surgery, with a goal of treating approximately 1,000 patients annually.
Dr. Michael Cook, Director of Bariatric Surgery at UMC and faculty member at LSU Health Sciences Center, emphasized the critical need for such a facility. “Obesity affects 40 percent of Louisiana’s population,” Dr. Cook stated. “Moreover, Louisiana leads the nation in severe obesity rates, yet only about one percent of those who qualify for bariatric surgery currently receive treatment.”
In contrast to other weight loss surgery centers, the new LCMC clinic will serve patients regardless of their insurance status. This inclusive approach aims to address one of the root causes of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and strokes.
By expanding access to bariatric surgery, the clinic hopes to significantly improve health outcomes and support efforts to combat the obesity epidemic in the region.
