Transitioning from high school to college can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding a routine that works. For me, the lack of structure in college led to a disorganized schedule—sleeping in, napping frequently, and generally feeling unmotivated. I missed the disciplined routine of high school sports and the regularity it provided.
My turning point came through yoga. Inspired by my older sister, who was training to become a yoga instructor, I decided to give it a try. Initially, I struggled to see the benefits of yoga and questioned if I was doing it right. However, yoga is about patience and consistent practice. I started small, committing to a 10-minute morning flow three times a week.
Gradually, I increased my practice to four, then five times a week. The changes were remarkable:
Improved Morning Wakefulness: Previously, it took me at least an hour to feel awake. Now, a 30-minute yoga session helps me feel alert and ready for the day right after waking up.
Better Sleep Quality: I experienced less tossing and turning at night. I now fall asleep easily as soon as I hit the pillow.
Enhanced Productivity and Attitude: Yoga helped me view my schoolwork more positively. While I’m still not thrilled about doing homework, my new mindset has reduced procrastination and improved my overall approach to studying.
Yoga has given me a new structure, balancing my hectic college life and bringing a sense of order I had been missing. It has not only enhanced my productivity but also reduced my stress levels and fostered a more positive outlook.
If you’re struggling to find your rhythm or seeking mental clarity in college, I highly recommend trying yoga. It may not resolve all issues, but it could be the positive change you didn’t know you needed.
