Fat Joe has had a long and successful career in the music industry, once weighing as much as 470 pounds. The “Lean Back” rapper has since lost 200 pounds and is eager to share his journey.
In an interview with US Weekly, the 54-year-old artist discussed his weight loss strategies, which include cutting back on carbohydrates and using the popular medication Ozempic to help shed the extra pounds. Managing his weight has become crucial for his health, especially since he has been living with diabetes for several years.
“We just try to eat everything with the least carbs as possible…so we try to stay away from the bread, pasta, and rice. That’s the smartest way to eat,” said Joe, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena.
The loss of his friend and collaborator, Big Pun, motivated Joe to take action regarding his health. Big Pun was a significant figure in the rap scene, known for his lyrical skill, but he tragically passed away from a heart attack at just 28 in 2000. Joe, reflecting on their similar body sizes, became concerned that he might face the same fate as his friend, prompting him to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Although the journey to self-improvement can be challenging, Joe has achieved his weight loss goals and currently does not plan to lose any more weight.
Ozempic, a medication originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, has gained popularity for its weight loss benefits when combined with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Type 2 diabetes arises when insulin production is disrupted, causing the pancreas to produce insufficient insulin. This common form of diabetes can lead to serious health complications if not managed properly. However, lifestyle changes can help put type 2 diabetes into remission.
The rising trend of off-label prescriptions for Ozempic for weight loss among celebrities has led to shortages for those with legitimate diabetes diagnoses, like Fat Joe. This situation has made many celebrities reluctant to disclose their use of the drug, as it can impact those who genuinely need it for their health.
Despite his health improvements and weight loss, Fat Joe has no plans to change his stage name, mainly because of his wife. “My wife would kill me. She likes me being a big boy,” he remarked.
