SEATTLE — Jules and Jason Lofton made the life-changing decision to undergo bariatric surgery at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, aiming to improve their health and prolong their lives.
“We tried everything,” Jason recounted. “You name it, we attempted it, but the weight just kept piling on. We could never find the right solution.”
Jason was the first to have surgery, followed by Jules six weeks later. Together, they have become a motivating force for each other, viewing themselves as a weight loss team.
“Surgery is a highly effective tool for weight loss, but more importantly, it is part of a comprehensive program,” explained Dr. Kevin Clive, medical director of Franciscan Surgical Associates at St. Michael Medical Center. This program encompasses a team of medical weight loss specialists, dietitians, psychologists, and physical therapists, offering long-term support for patients.
“This saved my life,” Jules expressed. “Depression is a serious issue that can impact weight and overall health. Since starting this journey, my life has changed dramatically. I’m genuinely smiling again.”
The Loftons chose Virginia Mason Franciscan Health due to its strong reputation and extensive resources.
“The entire system, from the nursing staff to Dr. Clive and his team, has been incredible. You truly feel like family,” Jules added.
Dr. Clive has guided numerous patients through their weight loss journeys, emphasizing that the focus is often on enhancing their quality of life. “It’s the everyday challenges that many people face, which society often overlooks, that contribute to a condition affecting nearly half the population—often accompanied by significant stigma,” he remarked.
