In a recent episode of the “Health First” podcast, renowned endocrinologist Agron Spahija shed light on the growing trend of using Ozempic, a medication originally developed for diabetes management, for weight loss.
Spahija explained that Ozempic is an agonist of two key hormones—GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide)—which play crucial roles in regulating blood sugar and appetite. “These hormones are released from the digestive tract when we eat,” he noted. “They stimulate insulin production from the pancreas and simultaneously promote satiety, which helps reduce food intake and, as a result, contributes to weight loss.”
While Ozempic’s primary purpose is to treat type 2 diabetes, its weight-loss benefits have garnered significant attention. According to Spahija, the drug can also be beneficial for individuals who are pre-diabetic or at risk of developing diabetes. This includes those with obesity or those showing signs of insulin resistance, a condition often linked to weight gain and difficulty losing weight.
“Patients who are obese or overweight, especially those exhibiting insulin resistance in their lab results, may benefit from Ozempic, even if they don’t have a formal diabetes diagnosis,” Spahija explained. However, he emphasized that any use of the drug should be under the guidance of a healthcare professional, particularly an endocrinologist.
While Ozempic shows promise for both diabetes and weight management, the endocrinologist cautioned that the long-term side effects of the drug are still not fully understood, as it is a relatively new treatment. Some users have reported side effects such as nausea and abdominal discomfort. Furthermore, Spahija advised individuals with thyroid issues to approach Ozempic with caution, as it may not be suitable for everyone.
As the medication gains popularity, further research and consultation with healthcare providers remain essential to ensure its safe and effective use for weight loss and diabetes treatment.
