Is the ‘One Meal a Day’ Diet Safe and Effective for Weight Loss?

by Daisy

The “One Meal a Day” (OMAD) diet has become increasingly popular among individuals aiming to lose weight. This approach, which restricts eating to just one meal per day, prompts many to question its safety and effectiveness.

The concept behind OMAD is straightforward: participants consume only one meal daily, without restrictions on the timing or specific foods consumed. However, the key question remains—does it truly deliver weight loss benefits without compromising health?

During a recent episode of Pinoy MD, Dr. Rolando Balburias, an internist and functional medicine expert, discussed the potential advantages of OMAD. He explained that extended fasting periods could aid in bodily repair and improve overall health. Nevertheless, he emphasized that OMAD may not be suitable for everyone and pointed out the importance of consulting a healthcare professional before embarking on this diet.

“Before starting OMAD, it’s crucial to evaluate the condition of your body,” Dr. Balburias said, highlighting the need to consider factors such as body composition, including muscle and fat mass. “This is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it must be medically supervised,” he added.

A key concern with the OMAD diet is its effectiveness in promoting weight loss, especially if the food consumed is highly processed. Dr. Balburias explained that consuming processed foods can spike insulin levels, which may hinder weight loss efforts and could lead to health issues such as insulin resistance or diabetes. “Elevated insulin levels, especially for those with insulin resistance, will not support weight loss,” he warned.

If a doctor clears an individual for the OMAD diet, Dr. Balburias recommends scheduling the eating window between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. He reassured participants that physical exercise is compatible with the diet, as long as it is well-coordinated and medically supervised. “Exercise is allowed, but it’s essential to implement OMAD appropriately in your daily routine,” he stated.

In conclusion, while OMAD may provide benefits for some individuals, it is vital to approach this diet with caution and under professional guidance to ensure it is both safe and effective.
