In a recent interview, Al Roker shared his candid thoughts on the use of weight loss medications, emphasizing a non-judgmental approach to those who choose this path.
The 70-year-old Today show co-host discussed his perspectives on health and food while promoting his new cookbook, Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By: Easy, Memory-Making Family Dishes for Every Occasion, co-written with his daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, and released in mid-October.
When asked about celebrities and others turning to weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Roker made it clear that he wasn’t inclined to judge their decisions. “I’m not gonna judge anybody,” he remarked in his interview with The Daily Mail. Roker reflected on food as an addiction or dependence for some people, noting that, unlike other addictive substances such as alcohol or drugs, food is essential for survival.
“If this is what works for them, I mean, who are we to say, ‘Oh, don’t do that,'” he stated. “As long as it’s safe and effective, good for you. I think everybody’s journey is their journey.”
Roker, who has been transparent about his own weight loss experiences, further expressed that he refrains from offering advice on dieting or weight loss, acknowledging that these personal challenges are difficult and unique to each individual. “It’s tough and everybody’s got to face that and they’ve got to figure out their path,” he said. For those who find success with weight loss medications, he offered his full support: “Great,” he said. “If it helps you, if that’s the thing that gets you over that point where you’re able to be healthier and lead a more active lifestyle, that’s great.”
These sentiments align with Roker’s stance earlier this year, when he encouraged others to “stay within your lane” and refrain from judging people who use medications for weight loss. In May, during a Today show segment, he also defended Kelly Clarkson after she opened up about using weight loss drugs. Roker remarked, “There’s too much judgment going on,” emphasizing that as long as individuals are working closely with their doctors, they should be allowed to make their own choices without facing public scrutiny.
As the conversation around weight loss medication continues to grow, Roker’s message remains clear: “Let people live their lives.”
