Rising Concerns Over Ozempic’s New Side Effect: Hearing Loss and Tinnitus

by Daisy

As Ozempic continues to gain popularity for its weight-loss benefits, users are raising concerns about a new and unsettling side effect: hearing problems. From Hollywood celebrities to everyday individuals, this diabetes medication has become widely used, but as its use spreads, so does the list of potential health risks.

While Ozempic was initially developed to help manage type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar, it has gained significant attention as a weight-loss solution. Studies show that patients can lose up to 15% of their body weight within a year, making it a sought-after treatment. However, as more people turn to the medication, reports of serious side effects are emerging. Common complaints include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue. There have also been alarming reports of severe conditions such as thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and even blindness.

Now, there are growing fears about a new potential risk: deafness. Patients using Ozempic have begun reporting symptoms like painful ringing in the ears, muffled hearing, and, in more extreme cases, complete hearing loss. Experts are investigating whether rapid weight loss associated with Ozempic is contributing to these auditory issues.

Dr. Robert DiSogra, an audiology consultant based in New Jersey, suggests that weight loss could lead to a reduction in the fatty tissue surrounding the Eustachian tubes, which connect the ears to the throat. When this fat shrinks, it may cause the tubes to remain open when they should be closed, leading to a range of hearing problems.

In one case shared by Dr. Tony Floyd from New South Wales, a patient experienced persistent pressure and muffled hearing in one ear after significant weight loss from Ozempic. Experts from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston explain that this condition, known as patulous eustachian tube dysfunction, occurs when the Eustachian tubes stay open, allowing sounds to be transmitted directly to the middle ear. Symptoms can include ringing, muffled hearing, and even autophony—the perception of one’s own voice, breathing, or heartbeat.

For patients affected by this condition, experts recommend managing triggers like caffeine intake, staying hydrated during physical activity, or adjusting hormonal treatments. In severe cases, surgery to modify the Eustachian tube may be necessary.

Despite these reports, the link between Ozempic and hearing loss remains a subject of debate. Some experts contend that there is no conclusive evidence connecting the medication to tinnitus or other hearing impairments. Dr. Leonard A. Jason, a professor at DePaul University, expressed that he has not encountered any reputable studies supporting hearing loss as a side effect of Ozempic.

However, some patients report troubling experiences. One Facebook user, Anna Helms, described her tinnitus flaring up after taking an Ozempic shot, while others on Reddit share similar accounts of hearing difficulties, including ringing in the ears and a persistent odd taste in the mouth after injections. Angie Dugdale, a singer from Utah, revealed that she could no longer sing due to severe pressure and muffled hearing in one ear following her Ozempic treatment.

While a number of individuals claim to have experienced hearing-related issues, experts emphasize that these incidents remain rare. Some speculate that diabetes itself, rather than the medication, could be the underlying cause of hearing loss, as the disease is known to damage nerves over time.

A spokesperson for Healthy Hearing, a major hearing-focused consumer website, stated that while there are sporadic reports of hearing issues from Ozempic users on forums, the medication and other GLP-1 agonists like Mounjaro do not appear to directly cause hearing problems.

As concerns continue to mount, The Daily Mail has reached out to Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, for a comment on these emerging reports.

In the meantime, experts advise users to be vigilant of any side effects and consult their healthcare providers for further guidance.
