Promising Results from New Weight-Loss Pill in Clinical Trials

by Daisy

Oxford Medical Products has unveiled encouraging results from the three-month clinical trials of Sirona, a novel weight-loss treatment designed for overweight individuals and those transitioning off GLP-1 medications.

The trials, conducted across three NHS hospitals, reported that participants experienced consistent weight loss, with individuals classified as having class 1 obesity shedding an average of 6.3% of their body weight.

Sirona is a dual-polymer hydrogel pill that expands in the stomach to reduce appetite. On average, participants consumed 400 fewer calories per day than those taking a placebo. Initial data suggests that Sirona could result in a 10-12% reduction in total body weight after 52 weeks. Importantly, no serious adverse events were reported during the trial, and 96% of participants adhered to the prescribed dosing schedule.

Dr. Camilla Easter, CEO of Oxford Medical Products, expressed optimism about the findings, stating, “We are at a critical juncture with our clinical data, which shows Sirona’s potential as a safe and effective solution for weight loss.” Sirona primarily targets adults with a BMI of 25-35, a group often neglected by current GLP-1 medications. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 43% of adults worldwide fall within this overweight category.

Dr. Asif Humayun, an NHS endocrinologist, praised the results, calling Sirona a breakthrough in weight-loss therapeutics. “Sirona offers a new approach for patients dealing with obesity and associated comorbidities,” he said.

Additionally, Dr. Humayun noted that Sirona could offer a long-term solution for individuals transitioning off GLP-1 medications, a group prone to regaining up to 65% of lost weight within a year of discontinuing treatment.

Ruth, one of the trial participants, shared her personal experience: “Throughout the trial, my BMI dropped from 37.7 to 31.2.”

Oxford Medical Products is now preparing for a larger pivotal trial in both the United States and the United Kingdom later this year. With these promising results, the company hopes to provide millions of individuals with a safe and effective weight-loss option.
