A rising number of individuals using weight-loss injections, particularly Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro (tirzepatide), are experiencing gallbladder issues, with some requiring gallbladder removal, according to Deborah Grayson, a pharmacist and nutritional therapist. Grayson raised this concern in a TikTok video, warning that these medications could significantly impact gallbladder health.
The Link Between Weight-Loss Injections and Gallstones
Grayson explained that weight-loss injections, such as Mounjaro, slow down the flow of bile through the gallbladder by suppressing the release of the hormone responsible for bile emptying. While this mechanism helps with weight loss, it also has a potential downside. As the flow of bile is delayed, it can become thicker, or “sludgy,” which increases the likelihood of gallstone formation.
Grayson shared that the risk of developing gallstones could be as high as 1 in 10 people using these drugs.
Gallbladder Side Effects and Other Risks
Eli Lilly has acknowledged the association between Mounjaro and gallbladder-related side effects, listing them as part of the medication’s safety warnings. In addition to gallbladder problems, Mounjaro has been linked to other serious side effects, including:
- Thyroid tumors and thyroid cancer
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Severe allergic reactions
- Kidney failure
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Vision changes
These risks are also associated with other weight-loss medications, such as Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide), produced by Novo Nordisk.
Risk Factors for Gallstones
Grayson pointed out that certain factors may increase the likelihood of developing gallstones while using weight-loss injections. These include:
- Gender: Women are at higher risk
- Age: Menopause or perimenopause
- Thyroid conditions
- Rapid weight loss: A common effect of these weight-loss injections
Other contributing factors include high cholesterol and poorly managed blood sugar, which can further elevate the risk of gallstone formation.
Symptoms of Gallstones
Grayson emphasized the importance of being vigilant for early warning signs of gallstones or sludgy bile, which could eventually lead to gallstone formation. Key symptoms to watch out for include:
- Acid reflux
- Trapped wind and excessive burping
- Pain below the ribs
- Left-sided shoulder pain
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea (or, in some cases, constipation)
- Pale, greasy stools that float
- Bowel urgency
If any of these symptoms occur, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly.
Important Considerations Before Starting Weight-Loss Injections
Grayson advised that individuals considering weight-loss injections should discuss their full medical history and any existing conditions with their healthcare provider before starting treatment. This is essential for identifying any potential risks and avoiding severe side effects.
