Wegovy, a weight loss medication similar to Ozempic, is now available on prescription at pharmacies across Ireland. However, it will not be accessible to medical card users.
Unlike Ozempic, which is only licensed for diabetes treatment, Wegovy is specifically approved for weight loss. Community pharmacist Sheena Mitchell highlights this key difference:
“Today marks the introduction of Wegovy to the Irish market. It contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, but while Ozempic is licensed solely for diabetes, Wegovy is approved for weight loss, offering a new solution for those struggling with obesity.”
How Does Wegovy Work?
Manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, Wegovy has gained attention for its effectiveness in helping people shed significant weight. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk have reportedly benefited from semaglutide-based treatments.
Clinical trials show promising results, with one-third of participants losing up to 20% of their body weight.
The drug works by mimicking GLP-1, a hormone that signals fullness to the brain, reducing appetite and calorie intake.
A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss
Despite its potential, experts emphasize that Wegovy should be used alongside lifestyle changes.
“These weekly injections support weight loss, but they should be combined with a calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise,” says Mitchell. “The government must also implement a clear strategy for treating obesity as a complex chronic disease.”
With Wegovy now available, Ireland joins other countries exploring medical solutions to combat obesity. However, the long-term impact and accessibility of the drug remain key concerns.
