Remi Bader, the popular TikTok influencer, has shared the challenges she faced after undergoing weight loss surgery, revealing that the experience led her into a “deep depression.”
In a candid interview on Khloé in Wonder Land, the 30-year-old influencer discussed her decision to undergo bariatric surgery in order to address long-standing health issues. Appearing on Khloé Kardashian’s podcast, Bader opened up about the physical and emotional toll the procedure took on her.
Over the past year, Bader gained between 80 and 100 pounds, which resulted in severe knee pain and a period of being bedridden due to back issues. Despite trying various weight loss methods, including multiple attempts with the medications Ozempic and Manjaro, Bader’s health continued to decline.
“I tried Ozempic before it was even popular,” she recalled. “My doctor recommended it because I was pre-diabetic, but it only resulted in a slight weight loss and left me feeling sick.”
After other methods failed, Bader’s doctor suggested a less invasive bariatric surgery known as the SADI-S (single anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy). Though she had concerns about the public’s perception of her undergoing such a procedure, she ultimately decided to go ahead with it, as it was recommended as a simpler alternative to traditional gastric bypass surgery.
However, the recovery process was anything but easy. While most patients recover quickly from the surgery, Bader’s experience was dramatically different. “I couldn’t even swallow water, and I was vomiting constantly,” she said. “The recovery was the worst thing I’ve ever gone through.”
For six weeks, Bader’s condition worsened to the point where she had to move in with her parents. During this time, she faced intense emotional and psychological struggles, including feelings of regret and self-doubt.
“I got into a very dark depression. I didn’t want to live anymore,” she shared. “I would just stare at the wall all day. It was truly horrifying.”
Despite being a role model for many, Bader struggled with feelings of guilt over her decision, especially as her social media presence had always promoted body positivity. She admitted that while she encouraged others to embrace their bodies no matter their size, she personally felt overwhelmed by the emotional and physical toll of her health battles.
“I think at that time, I had a lot of regret. I was struggling, but I was still supposed to be this person who said, ‘Be confident in whatever you look like,'” Bader reflected.
Thankfully, Bader is now in a much healthier mental space, embracing both her body and her journey. She emphasizes that people with larger body types can still be healthy and confesses that, at times, she envied the confidence of her friends. However, she clarified that her path was different.
“My journey was different. I was in pain, and I had to make this decision for my health,” she explained. “Now, I’m in a better place mentally and physically, and I’ve come to love myself inside and out.”
Understanding SADI-S Surgery
The SADI-S procedure, which combines a sleeve gastrectomy and a duodenal switch, is a newer approach to weight loss surgery. During the sleeve gastrectomy, around 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach. The duodenal switch involves rerouting part of the small intestine to reduce calorie absorption. This combination is designed to help patients lose weight by both restricting the amount they can eat and limiting the absorption of nutrients.
Bader’s story sheds light on the complexities of weight loss surgery, highlighting the physical and emotional challenges that can accompany such a life-altering decision.
