O Grows community garden in Opelika, Alabama, will host its spring garden opening and a goat yoga session this Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m. The event, which takes place over Easter weekend, is free and open to all ages from the Opelika and Auburn communities.
Located at 1103 Glenn St. in Opelika, O Grows is known for its farmers’ market, which offers a variety of fresh food and products. The garden serves as an open space where community members can plant fruits and vegetables. O Grows is a partnership between Auburn University, the City of Opelika, Opelika City Schools, and Envision Opelika.
One of the main missions of O Grows is to combat food insecurity in the Opelika area. The garden supports this goal by donating fresh produce to the local housing authority and senior center located nearby.
Saturday mornings at O Grows typically involve volunteers helping the community in various ways, with the goat yoga session being one of the fun and unique events aimed at giving back.
In addition to providing a space for gardening, O Grows encourages people to reconnect with nature, reminding them to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. The garden also offers a chance for children to step away from screens and engage in hands-on activities, such as planting and gardening.
Antonio Martinez, the farmers’ market manager at O Grows, has been with the organization for about a year, contributing to programming, education, and special events. He shared that his favorite part of working at O Grows is the sense of community.
“My favorite part about O Grows is simply the people. We come together to form relationships, not just to work,” said Martinez.
The goat yoga session is a fun way for O Grows to attract the community. The event can accommodate up to 50 participants, with instructor Lela Anderson leading the class. The session is open to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced yogis, and offers a unique opportunity to practice yoga alongside four baby goats that will roam freely during the session.
“This is a chance for people to gather and interact with the goats. People love the goats!” Martinez added.
O Grows stays connected with the community through its Facebook and Instagram pages, where they share updates on upcoming events and the garden’s available produce, as well as the work they’re doing in the Opelika and Auburn areas.
