MSD Board Takes Steps Toward Rebuilding NMHS Gym at Recent Meeting

MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford School Board is moving ahead with plans to rebuild the gymnasium at North Medford High School.

During a meeting Thursday night, the district provided an update on the project and approved the use of a Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) method for the work.

Unlike the traditional design-bid-build approach, the CM/GC method brings the contractor into the process early, allowing them to collaborate during the design phase. According to the district, this strategy is intended to speed up the project and provide more predictable costs.

The district also gave a status update on construction progress. Phase one of the demolition is complete, and phase two is now underway. This next phase allows engineers to assess the structural integrity of the gym’s south and west walls.

Superintendent Bret Champion, who is stepping down soon, said a third-party engineering report is expected to be presented at the board’s next work session on May 8.

“That’s the most important piece. I mean, this is all very important, but in terms of next steps, that piece is critical,” Champion said.

The project is still in the design phase. Once that is finished, the district will be able to determine a Guaranteed Maximum Price for construction.
