A new outdoor gym has officially opened in Cwmbran, providing an accessible fitness facility for the local community. Located at Northfields, near the skate park off Llanfrechfa Way, the gym replaces the previous outdoor equipment located near The Olive Club in Croesyceiliog.
The facility features eight workout stations, including calisthenic equipment designed for strength training and exercise bikes for cardio workouts. Each station includes scannable QR codes, offering users easy-to-follow instructions.
The gym’s location at Northfields was chosen following a consultation with nearly 200 local residents last year. The majority of respondents preferred the Northfields site due to better drainage, and 50% voted in favor of the location. The consultation also called for more modern, inclusive equipment suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including those who use wheelchairs.
Councillor Mandy Owen expressed gratitude to those who participated in the consultation, stating, “Thank you to everyone who took part. We carefully considered all the suggestions and created a design we hope will appeal to anyone looking to improve their fitness.”
Aled Walker, Torfaen Council’s health and wellbeing officer, emphasized the benefits of outdoor exercise, particularly calisthenics, which uses bodyweight for resistance. “This equipment will help people improve strength, mobility, and coordination. It’s adaptable for various ages and abilities, making it an inclusive option for everyone,” he said.
The new gym is part of a £1.1 million initiative aimed at enhancing green spaces in Torfaen. The project is funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
